Our featured author, Józef Hen, is a Polish-Jewish novelist, essayist and screenwriter. He was born in Warsaw and continues to live there. Warsaw figures prominently in many of his books, including Nowolipie Street. In recognition of his literary achievements, in 2009 he was awarded a prestigious City of Warsaw Literary Award for his works “about Warsaw, in Warsaw, and for Warsaw.”

Hen is well known in Poland and abroad. His works have been translated into over twenty languages.

Hen’s other books (published between 1960 and 2009) include April, Yokohama, The Crime, A Folk Tale, I, Michel de Montaigne, Royal Dreams, I Fear Not Sleepless Nights, No One Is Calling, The Clown, A Great Man, My Friend The King, The Silent Among Us, Professor T’s Notebooks, The Ping-Pong Player and Journal For The New Century. Hen’s short stories include The Boxer And Death and a triptych of short stories, Dayan’s Eye. Hen’s short stories appeared in an anthology of the best contemporary story tellers published in Holland in 1978 and in an anthology of the world’s most beautiful love stories published in Israel in 1992.
